The House Interior

Restored to a high standard of modern convenience, this private home comprises 3 stories of living space of approximately 500 square meters or 5,382 square feet. The ceilings on the ground and first floors are more than 11 feet, or 3.4 meters, high. Some are painted Italian fresco style. The outer and some of the inner walls of this old but authentically and tastefully renovated house are close to a meter thick, keeping heat in during the winter and out during the summer. The floors throughout are of stone, old oak, and tommettes (terra cotta-like hexagonal tiles) typical of the region, and fabricated by artisans in the neighboring community of Salernes.

The Ground Floor: The front door opens into a long, natural light-flooded entrance hall with a heated (in winter) stone floor and painted ceiling. It faces a staircase sweeping upward under painted ceilings and lighted by a skylight at the top. A door encountered on the way up the staircase opens into a windowed WC/powder room.

To the right of the entrance hall, paneled French doors open into the living room. It features a wood-burning fireplace, old oak floors, and comfortable seating; a flat-screen television with satellite programming, VCR and DVD players, tapes and discs; and high-speed internet access.

To the left of the entrance hall, through matching paneled French doors, there is the dining room with wood-burning fireplace, old oak floors, and a table and chairs to accommodate up to 12 people.

On the other side of the dining room, a fully equipped, modern kitchen occupies adjoining rooms. The main kitchen has the stove and ovens, along with a sink, dishwasher, professional coffee machine, and an eating area most comfortably accommodating 8 people. The adjoining kitchen houses another sink and dishwasher, as well as 2 refrigerators, a pantry closet for food storage, and the house sound system. Off the main kitchen, the laundry room is equipped with 2 clothes washers, a clothes dryer, a professional and a less industrial strength iron, and an ironing board. A clothesline for outdoor drying can be found outside the adjoining kitchen door, which opens onto a small courtyard bordered by a jasmine-climbing wall and herb garden.

The sweeping staircase illuminated during the day by the skylight connects the ground floor to the two floors above.
the bedroom
The First Floor: Two large bedroom-bathroom suites, one on each side of the house, occupy the first floor. One enters each suite through a door opening from the staircase landing into a small hall in front of which is another door opening into a large closet. The bedroom lies to the front façade side of the hall, and the bathroom to the backside of the house. Both bedrooms feature floor to ceiling lace-curtained windows with interior shutters, a painted ceiling , a gas-fueled fireplace, an extra long queen-sized bed with lamp tables on each side, a writing desk, a couple of chairs, built-in storage units, a telephone with direct inward dialing and intercom capability, a CD player, and high speed internet access. Both bathrooms are windowed, mirrored and floored in marble tile. Both offer, along with the toilet, twin marble-countered sinks, storage cabinets and drawers, a bath tub/shower, and a hair dryer. The bathroom on the southwest side also offers a walk-in shower. A common sitting room, or antichambre, in which there is a satellite-programmed television, separates these suites and may be reached by a door from either bedroom.

Another large bedroom-bathroom suite on the first floor is reached through the door located in the hallway that separates the kitchen and laundry room and up the staircase. The bedroom offers 2 extra long twin beds separated by a table and lamp, with the possibility of a third single bed cleverly housed in a piece of furniture nearby. A period armoire offers clothing storage space. A couple of chairs, a writing desk, and a satellite-programmed television, a telephone with direct inward dialing and intercom capability, a CD player, and high speed internet access complete the furnishing. Three curtained windows shuttered from the outside to let in or keep out natural light, as desired, punctuate the walls. The adjoining, tommette-floored and windowed bathroom offers along with a toilet, twin mirrored pedestal sinks, a bath tub/shower, a hair dryer, and a commodious chest of drawers.
